Pros And Cons Of Online Storage?

Today you have two options to store your data: online and offline. Both have their pros and cons, which we’ll try to point out on the next lines. Mostly it’s a question of what data you want to store, how sensible it is and how it should be accessed.

The biggest question is, if you trust the guys who offer online storage. It’s all about trust. Today it’s quite easy to set up a professional looking website, connect a server to the internet and offer online storage. So you don’t know how big the company behind the website really is. What happens if your online provider quits his service for whatever reason? In most cases your data would simply be gone and when you don’t have a local copy available, you’ll have a big problem.

The second big issue is security. How do you know, if the online provider is protecting your data against foreign attacks? Are you even sure, that your online provider is not abusing your data for his own profit? Yes I know - this all sounds strange, but you really have to be careful who has access to your important data.

Should you forget about online storage? Well, this is depending on the type of data you want to store. When you have insensitive data (of course everyone needs to evaluate which data is sensitive and which not for himself) and need access to it on the way an online storage can be perfect. Additionally, when you want to share your data with others, this can be the way to go. When you have sensible data, as customer relevant data or billing information you should store everything locally.

The other option is storing your files on your own server, most often on a server computer within your company or office. What you should know is that it’s possible to access your files over the internet too. All you need is a broadband internet connection, a DynDNS account and a flat rate. You’ll be able to set up your server to be reachable via the internet and you can be sure that your data is stored at YOUR place.
